How do you identify a full floater? Are the hubs different? What clues would you look for, assuming its still assembled and on a vehicle?

If it has a hub sticking out like the front axle then it likely is a full floater.

rear

if its a full floater, you should have the hub sticking out through the wheel, much like int he front, only with out the selectability of locking it. If it is not, it shoudl be flush with the wheel, not sticking through the center hole.

thats what i thought, but thought I'd look pretty dumb if i said "semi floats dont have a hub, right?" and turned out to be wrong.

hurray, i have full floaters!

A true full-float Toyota LAND CRUISER rear axle will not have a removable rear differential cover, like the Toyota LAND CRUISER semi-float, since you do not need to remove c-clips in order to remove the axle shafts.

The exception to that rule being the mini trucks which have no c-clips and are semi floating

just like front axles-which are all full floating.

HI ALL, Brand new to the Site and Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
I have just bought a 1977 FJ40. My rear hubs are exactly like those pictured earlier in this thread.
My rear left hub is leaking (axle? or diff?) oil from the bolts on the exterior of the hub (some have sheared off so to me it looks like a gasket leak)
One 'reputable' mechanic has advised that I need to replace the hub AND the axle.
Does this sound right? wanted to hear your opinions before I proceed to source parts.
Thanks, Mark
(my FJ40 is a LHD model, in Australia)

Full floats are reported to have bolts and guide pins shear when not checked for proper torque often. You can pull the axle shaft and see do a visual inspection for rust/wear/cracks/etc that would signal immediate replacement.

I am not at home so I dont have my saved bookmarks for all the full float tech. There are threads about going to a larger sized guide pin and bolts for hub. I am almost 98% positive that front hub is interchangeable with rear full float hub.

anybody out there selling one? I have a full float rear axle HOUSING out of a fj-45 that im' going to put in my 78' fj-40, but I need the parts to put it together.......shafts, hubs, seals, and the like. let me know. THX fjfranken40..
