I have been trying to figure out what to do with my flaking plastic grille. Does anyone have any ideas about painting it? Do they make chrome paint? I don't want to go black or spend $500 on a new one. Well thanks for any ideas

now don't steal my idea but I was thinking it might look good white(ish) like a fj40, but only on certian colors.

yes they make chrome paint, not sure if it works or looks good.

painting black will be the easiest and will look good IMOP

or you could check out a new one on ebay or something. i got one once that was in pretty good condition for $6 i think. there are a couple on there now. the black ones look cool too though.

I painted mine with a few coats of spray paint. It's been over a year and it still looks good(Chicago winters tested). Just gotta take your time masking off everything nicely and waiting for each coat to dry.

The front of my 60 was "rough" from many miles...so I repainted the grill, headlight covers and lower valence. Not sure that I love the result, but it's better than before. I like blue (it's my favorite color) but maybe I have too much black going on. Not sure how it'll hold up on the long-term. The original "chrome" is just a coating, and when aged, peels easily. I peeled off the loosest stuff only. There were many chrome spots that I could have removed, but once you start, where do you stop? In a sense, the idea is to use the paint to glue down the old chrome.

This is a pic w/only 5,000miles on it.

I had the same problem and repainted the grill and headlight surrounds with a spray can of mottled paint from Home Depot. The paint is designed to look like wrought iron when dry. I didn't do to much prepping. First, I removed the grill and headlight surrounds from the vehicle. Then I power washed everything with a couple of shots of simple green. I sanded the remaining wet spots with wetdry sandpaper and then sprayed it on. It has been more than a year and it looks the same as it did on day one......NICE.

If you go this route, I would recommend taking the extra time to touch up any rust spots on the inside cover of the headlight supports, lower radiator, and valence.

My rig is being fixed down south otherwise I would post some shots.

i have the same prob going on. i dont really like chrome but i think if i paint it black it will take away some of the fj60 look away. i already have black wheels bumpers and frame but i think the chrome grill looks good intil it gets worse which then it will prob, be painted black...anyone have any pics???

I have used an epoxy-based appliance paint in pale silver on some of the plastic parts of my cruiser. I sticks really well, if prepped propoerly, and looks good. It's not shiny like chrome, but a muted light silver color.

black was an option on non US cruisers as well as GOLD!

you might try lightly sandblasting it with a very fine grit sand to remove the "chrome" finish (which is really just a paint) to take everything down to the base material. a couple of coats of good automotive primer should fill in the blasted surface, and if you want it smoother, just wet sand until you get there. add your color of choice, and wa-la, you've got yourself a brand new grill & headlight trim.

"chrome" paint does exist in rattle cans, just peruse a good auto parts store and you should be able to find it. I've also seen "gold chrome" in rattle cans as well, but hey, that's pushing it....too much bling for my thing.... ;)

I just recently painted the grille and headlight bezels of my FJ62 dark grey, and it looks good. Not as harsh as black, but the original chrome was flaky, faded, and beyond repair. Since the FJ62 emblem is integral to the grille, I carefully covered the letters with Vaseline, then rubbed the vaseline and paint off after I was done. Worked out pretty well.

good to know pimp. it will be black sooner or later just kinda like the weatherd chrome look for now.

What about using Durabak or Herculiner on the chromed areas? By the way, has anybody used Durabak on actual chrome, and if so, what were the results? I've got some nerf bars I'd like to make black.

thanks for all of the great ideas. I like dougs grille, very original! I think I going to try dark grey. I'm going to get the mirrors too, I can't beleive that they want $279 for a new one. anyway thanks again.

Nice look !!!!!

The charcoal grille looks pretty darned good on that 62.

I'll keep that image in mind for when mine needs done as well.

What's up with the OYOT emblem?

I liked the prices at that site, but what's up with the missing
letters on the grille?
