As a part of my new bumper, I did not want to do a tire carrier, because with an active family of 6 I use it all the time and I hate dealing with swingouts. Not to mention the cost, weight, etc. So I decided to replace my (still new) 35x12.5x16 trxus MT spare, which has resided on the roof rack, with a 35x10.5x16 SSR.
Why? Because the trxus MT would almost fit standing up behind the 3rd row (my 3rd row is always up with four kids, that's why I have an 80), but not quite. It still pressed on the glass when closed, but not by much. So I saw the 10.5" SSR and figured it would fit. And it does
by angling just slightly against the lower hatch and seats.
I don't plan to keep it back there full time vs. the roof, but it brings it down for wheeling and when I need the roof rack for bigger stuff. I'll fab up a mount/tie-down system, which will be pretty simple. Here are some pics.
BTW, this is a great looking tire size for those who like a narrower tire. It's a swamper, so you still have a lot of tread and it looks and feels a lot more substantial than a 10.5" AT, but it is in fact narrower. Don't pay much attention to the fact that the SSR looks taller. The tires on sitting on snow and one is mounted and one is not.
