I hope I don't disturb the hornets nest with this question... Heres the deal, I loved my 88 FJ62, i sold it with 300k orig motor and trans believe it or not. After owning it i realize that a truck fits my life style just a little more. So I want a Toyota truck 4x4 to play with. I would like to take it wheeling. Something easy to put 33's or 35's on and install lockers. V6 or 4cyc? I am not worried about MPG this will not be a daily driver. I want one thats not going to kill me trying to get parts because of it rarity. I want one that the after market parts are reasonably priced unlike the FJ62. So all your opinions are requested please give me the pros and cons if you don't mind. Thank in advance.

I went from a '90 FJ62 to an '04 Tacoma doublecab V6 no regrets. Definitely everything is cheaper and more abundant. A first gen taco isn't a bad choice but you might want to look at something even older. If you do end up with a first gen let me know I have some new OME springs I'd sell you cheap.

What's your budget? First generation Tacomas are all over the place, and many already have the rear locked. But most mini-trucks won't go to 35's very easily, so stick with 33's unless you want to invest in other infrastructure (or risk breakage).

if you can afford it, go for a double cab trd, otherwise any 95.5-04 trd tacoma or 4runner with elocker will fit the bill perfect for fairly heavy wheeling.

However if you plan on wheeling pretty advanced rock crawling trails and beatin the piss out of it, stick with an early solid axel swaped pickup or 4runner.

I am not a supporter of solid axle swaped tacomas and 3rd gen 4runners, the runners are to big and the tacomas just dont have the frame for it.

Definitely get the V6. Well worth it over the I4, especially if you're going with 35's.

6cyl- 1st/2nd gens will be the cheapest.. and its not hard to do a re-gear on these trucks, not expensive either... but Id look for one with a locker already just so you have one less thing to add...
