I have base 86 lj 70 a non turbo diesel. I started today and 2 minutes into the drive a hard knock started. Not just the diesel noise. I pulled over and oil was leaking from the valve gasket and it sounded like a value may have broke or something. I nursed it home and parked.

I know a lot about gas landcruisers 40 and 60 series. but know nothing about diesel 4 engines. I thought it would never break.

How bad do you all think this is? Can you just get a valve job top end rebuild.

It looks and sound like something bad happen under the valve cover.

thanks

My first thought is you have dropped a pre cup but you won't know until you remove the head. Unfortunately if thats the case the piston will most likely be trashed and the rebuild will involve more than just the top end.

Take the valve cover off. take the glow plugs out.
rotate the engine clockwise by hand, feel for contact etc.
next you can try draining the oil and check for metal debris, then take the oil pan off.

All the above should take you about 4-5 hours max at a leisurely pace.
