Isn't that an F engine? SOR quit doing F's a long time ago - it looks like they don't even do the 2F any more.

Every now and then one of those lifted diesel p/u’s with the extra large exhaust tailpipe passes me and the sound it makes reminds me of the sound I make when I’ve eaten something my stomach disagrees with, kind of “loose” sounding

A lot more in big D than here in the land of NASCAR...

My 2F has been sounding loose for about 3 decades; tune and adjust it every two or three years and drive it until it drops.

If it sounds loose, maybe the motor mounts are worn out.

Do a compression test.

To summarize above:
1) check compression dry n wet..
2) adjust valves
3) check compression dry n wet

And then go from there (Toyota 6 bottom end is just getting broken in at 100,000 mi.)

P.S. If you think there is a specific problematic sound, you can use a long screwdriver pressed to your ear and the location to listen or just buy a cheap mechanics stethoscope (you’ll get to hear all sorts of internal noises) to identify where it is actually coming from. Hopefully And likely just valves.

I never had one that didn't sound like a ticking clatter trap. I'd be worried if it didn't make noise!
