I am repairing the rust on my rear fenders and now that I have removed all the rust their are big holes. So now I can smell the exhaust. It seems that if I take off with the pedal pressed 3/4 to the floor, I can strong smell of gas. Also it idles at 1000-1100 rmp never at factory setting. Any Ideas what to do or check.

Yes Archie. I just fixed the A/C and I was driving with the windows up when I noticed the smell. I know because of the holes in the rear fenders are allowing the exhaust to enter the cab but it doesn't smell like exhaust but fuel and little exhaust. Could this have something to do with the ICV?

CAn you post some pictures of your rust repair? It will help me plan the same project.....and it will help us figure out if you ripped off one of the evaporative fuel lines....causing the smell.

Don't weld anything till you fix the gas leak.....like I had to say that.

I can post some pictures when I learn how to weld better. As far as the evap hose, not sure haven't checked that but I will. The smell of fuel is only present while driving sometimes. But more noticable when I punch the gas.

I got a faint gas smell near the gas cap and that is because one of the fuel lines has a very small leak near the opposite side of the filler cap. Take off the "skid plate" off just below and behind the filler neck and inspect. You might have a bigger leak.

How old is the fuel pump? I finally traced the raw gas smell to my fuel pump, which had decided to wear out...

the gas cap can fail. they are to be replaced as a regular service item. why ignore it?

fixed the gas odor in my cabin and it was less than $10. or, you could try a dozen other more expensive things first...

I will buy a new cap today!!!!! Im not sure about the Fuel pump!!

heh... do you have the factory service manual? it goes through how to test your charcoal cannister...

Its on Order....

NIKOS is right. You can access more of these lines by opening up the interior panel in the rear of the truck. The panel moves out of the way and will expose the filler neck and evaporative gas lines. If the smell is pronounced when you do this, then I suspect those lines have failed....probably rusted.

I have had this open for the last 2 weeks, and today I put my head close to the hoses and the smell was strong. The hoses look good but how do I tell if they went bad or not? What am I looking for the cost to replace these hoses? I also ordered a gas cap today just incase!

buller, buller, buller?

I ordered a OEM gas cap but I couldn't wait to try it out to see if it solved my problem. I purchased a cap from PEP BOYs and I did smell a thing after repacing. Thinks for the tips.!!!!
