After the portal axle swap my brakes have been rather poor to say the least, in reverse they would not hold you still on a 25 degree or better slope.

After looking at various master cylinders I found one on eBay from a 1985-1988 1 ton 2 w/d Toyota p/u, it is a direct bolt on replacement for the '91-'92. This doubled my forward braking power and in reverse it will now hold even on very steep angles.

Just a thought but it may be a big improvement on the stock FJ80s.

Glad to hear you found a match for your portal axle brakes, but weather it will improve the braking of a stock cruiser is not a slam dunk,

A master cylinder does not have much in it, it is basically just a pair of pistons, the important differences are bore and stroke.

A larger diameter piston will move a larger volume of fluid per inch traveled but at a lower pressure for a given input force, the effect to the user is more pedal force and less stroke for a given amount of braking,

A smaller diameter piston will generate more pressure for a given force but move less fluid per inch of travel, effect being less force for a given amount of braking but with increased pedal travel.

So is the 1 ton smaller or larger bore? Sounds like it is smaller.

Slightly larger bore but quite a bit longer stroke, I think the reason it helps so much is because of how much fluid it takes to push the shoes out to the drums,

With less volume the pedal is almost to the floor before the shoes are against the drums (even with the shoes adjusted close to the drums).
