I life in charlotte NC and am looking at buying an FJ40. I dont really know anything about Land Cruisers so any advice would be appreciated. I dont have a lot of money to spend(7k-10K). Ill mostly just use it to drive around town. Does anyone have any advice on how I should start. Thanks in advance for your help.

You should be able to find a fairly nice 40 in that price range. You may want to try and find one that already has power steering or you could just add it yourself. Later 40's came with the more popular 2F engine, and 4 speed tranny combo which you may want if streetability is a concern.

For that price you could easily find one. You say you live in charlotte there is one for sale on south blvd across from an auto bell near up town. I'll check to see if it is still there tomorrow. I also know there is one for sale in Uhwarrie. I must say though daily driving a 40 won't be that fun. For a DD i'd say go with an 80.

Do you know how hard it is to find a diesel? Or make it a diesel? I saw one that was getting 35 mpg!

Find a diesel? Pretty hard as those that have them don't want to get rid of them, I presume you are talking about an actual bj40. There was an article in a toyota trails about importing a bj from australia though and it seemed straight forward. As far as turning it into a diesel. Not that hard it can be expensive and time consuming though. Cheapest route would be a 6.2 from a chevy since there are millions of adapter plates already made for chevys to toyotas.

Damn I forgot to check if that one is still for sale on south blvd.... i'll check soon though.

I am here in Charlotte and havent seen any for sale lately. Honestly i would broaden your search to the southeast. For that price range you can prob get a decent one you fly to it and you could drive home from somewhere or have it shipped for a decent price. search the first 3 or 4 pages of the classifieds lots of folks are trying to sell their cruisers for various reasons. There is a guy on there who has a 55 an 80 and a 40 and needs to sell at least 1, and they are 5k each.

Thanks for your help. i think i will get one from the mid west. After searching through forums that seems like the best way to go. Has anyone ever bought an FJ off of one of those websites like cruiser solutions?

Josh; I saw a very nice one, blue, at the corner of Downs and Westinghouse, east of 77. I don't know if it's still available, but perhaps someone around may know.
