A VI can be a scary prospect for a 28 year old vehicle.....Keep it away from Crappy Tire.
My truck came from Alberta 3 years ago, so I went through the VI experience. I had mine done eventually by a Commercial Truck mechanic who had his inspectors license in Mission and he passed it. I'm sorry I can't remember his name, but he was referred to me by a friend. He looked for all the right stuff but didn't ding me for rust holes, weepy knuckles, etc. My previous inspection shop expected a 28 year old vehicle to look and operate like new, which is ridiculous.
Make sure your brakes are serviceable. If they do a driving test, they will likely do a panic stop to see if it pulls to one side. All the outside lights have to work. Horn and wipers have to work. Winshield washer needs to squirt something out on the windshield. Hood safety latch has to work.
There had better not be any significant leaks of engine fluids. Wipe off your knuckles if they weep a lot (then buy a rebuild kit from Steve

) Tie rod ends and other steering components need to be solid.
Ask for a copy of the inspection sheet before hand so you can go over all of the details before paying your fee. Because if they have to inspect it again, that will cost you more money of course. Save some time and coin and fix them yourself ahead of time.
Good Luck!
