A week ago I got a VI notice. Now I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a shop that does vehicle inspections, Steve??

anyways any pointers on what they look for?? what needs to be in good shape?? my truck is not really in bad shape but I know I need fender flares and I got to do some new tail lights any other suggestions??

A VI can be a scary prospect for a 28 year old vehicle.....Keep it away from Crappy Tire.:censor:

My truck came from Alberta 3 years ago, so I went through the VI experience. I had mine done eventually by a Commercial Truck mechanic who had his inspectors license in Mission and he passed it. I'm sorry I can't remember his name, but he was referred to me by a friend. He looked for all the right stuff but didn't ding me for rust holes, weepy knuckles, etc. My previous inspection shop expected a 28 year old vehicle to look and operate like new, which is ridiculous.

Make sure your brakes are serviceable. If they do a driving test, they will likely do a panic stop to see if it pulls to one side. All the outside lights have to work. Horn and wipers have to work. Winshield washer needs to squirt something out on the windshield. Hood safety latch has to work.
There had better not be any significant leaks of engine fluids. Wipe off your knuckles if they weep a lot (then buy a rebuild kit from Steve ;) ) Tie rod ends and other steering components need to be solid.

Ask for a copy of the inspection sheet before hand so you can go over all of the details before paying your fee. Because if they have to inspect it again, that will cost you more money of course. Save some time and coin and fix them yourself ahead of time.

Good Luck! :steer:

Safety Nazi's got you? What specifically did they point out or find in their inspection? The roadside guys can be brutal if they want to.

10:1 that the tail lights is what got him pulled over. Wheels outside the fender seem to be becoming the standard around here. If they enforced this reg in Abbotsford, then they would be issuing VIs right off the lots - epesially that lot just across from Crappy Tire.

call me
we'll take care of it.

lol yes john thats right I got a VI for one tail light out on the highway and he was an a$$hole gave me a level 2 vi just for that, and didn't even explain what he was giving me just told me I had thirty days to get it fixed and everything else could be found on ICBC website.
Happy valentines day!!!

anyways I told him I had been out on trails all day and that it either burnt out or the wires got damaged during the day. He said I had no lights on the back of my truck. BS I pulled off at the nearest exit And me and my Girlfriend checked the lights one marker light out in total ERRR pissed me off

Steve I'll give you guys a call on Fri.

wouldn't have helped with this guy and I sure as heck wasn't going to change it on highway 1. It's ok once april/warm weather occur I have a full LED setup to go on the back of my truck then a cop can only complain about them being to bright.:D

If your using the existing 40 wiring harness and just changing out the bulbs/housing be prepared for a hassle. I have in the past tried to swap out the bulbs (1156/1157) to the LED type. No go. Apparently the bulb resistance isn't enough to trigger the turn relay (or something like that). One time I tried to swap my 40 to a two lamp systems using a 3 wire to 2 wire converter. I ended up with a glove box full or resistors to create a load on the wiring to make it work.
This was a few years ago and I haven't experimented in awhile, so take this with a grain of salt.
GG

Nope, you are going to have to do what Phil did or buy new flashers for your rig that will work with LEDs. I believe GROTE sells them too.

I always have a full set of spare bulbs with me. IMO, no matter how cold or wet, it is a hell of a lot better than a VI. But if you got an officer with a chip on her or his shoulder and you and your rig look like a good place to vent - your stuck with a VI. If they really want to be nasty, they can just call a tow truck and impound your vehicle and there isn't a lot you can do unless you can fix the issue on the spot.

Good to know. I run cheap trailer lights on my 40 as well, didn't know if the LEDs were actually road legal.

On topic of the VI thing, never dealt with it myself, but my old man got pulled over in his army truck heading to the Kootenays (was told it was a random inspection ). The cop had him pulled over for nearly a half hour and checked everything trying real hard to find reason to issue a VI. He never did get the satisfaction.

As it was said, get the inspection sheet and go over everything on the truck. You probably will find stuff needing to be fixed before you start paying an inspection facility to do it for you.

Good luck

The guy I had 7-8 years ago was DETERMINED to find a problem and he kept beating on the vehicle till he found something. He was eventually able to drive his screwdriver through a seam in the floor. I'll grant that the car was not in perfect showroom condition but I'm sure I could have found something wrong with his Yukon or whatever peice of crap he was driving had I had the chance too! Some of them have a chip on their shoulder so big you wonder how they get anywhere.
