Hello,

New to community. Just bought a land cruiser after my XC90 engine broke. I wanted a car that will last longer.

It came with a cattle guard and tail light guards. I don't want them. Is there anyone on here who would be interested in them?

I don't want much money for them or maybe even free. I live in Northern NJ.

Anyone interested in it?

- John

I doubt you'll get a lot of interest around here, those are generally referred to as "damage multipliers." Congrats on the Cruiser, though. You must not have had the xc90 with the v8?

Haha whats a damage multiplier? And thanks! I'm excited to get it pimped out to my liking. And yeah I had the 5cyl one which was supposedly the most reliable engine but not in my case!

The cattle guard is notorious for flexing and bending back under minor impacts that the bumper could have otherwise handled. When it flexes back it can damage the grill, hood, headlights, etc. The cattle guards are nowhere near the strength of a true, dedicated bull-bar bumper setup. I've seen trucks that got in fender benders where the bumper would have been slightly damaged. But, since the cattle guard made contact first, it bent back and dented in the hood and broke the grill. What would have been a few $100 to fix became $1000+ very quickly.

The rear covers are notorious for "catching" branches and then causing the taillight to break or be broken out of the fender.....much more expensive than if the light got just a crack in it.

Wow, haha thanks for this! I'm glad you're giving me more motivation to get rid of it!

Someone will want them as they look "cool" for glorified mall-cruisers. But, for off-roading purposes, they are problematic. Throw them on Craigslist and see if someone bites. I doubt you'll find many owners here that would need these.

As an aside, here's a link to what a real bull-bar can do and how it can protect the cruiser in 200lb deer strikes....
Hitting a 200 lb deer with an ARB at 50 mph

BTW....congrats on the new cruiser and welcome to the cult.

Wow, yeah, I imagine that some folk do want to look cool with it. But that sounds believable. I intend to use this vehicle to carry my video gear mainly to jobs around the tri state area so not much off roading for me! unless I go to explore some backwoods abandonment haha.

And wow that ARB looks pretty incredible.

Thanks for the welcome! I really hope to have this truck for 10-20 years

What you have there sir is a brush guard or a grill guard. This is a cattle guard. With that being said Ive always kind of liked them even on that LC you have there.

You picked the "right" vehicle for sure. They are super reliable with basic maintenance and the amount of help you'll find on this forum is incredible. I'm no mechanic, but have been "coached" by other forum members and I religiously review the FAQ section for any maintenance tips. They are invaluable and save a TON of money on basic repairs....heck, there is an FAQ on the Brake Booster rebuild and the Timing Belt change (both BIG, expensive jobs that can be DIY'd). I've never owned any vehicle with the level of support as this.

Haha oh wow I was way off! If you lived closer and wanted it I'd just give it to you!

Hi, Welcome!
So you know, we don't put sale ads in the Tech sections so it was moved to classifieds. But do feel free to discuss the tech side of the guard in the 100 forum.

Yes I agree I did about a month of research on this truck. I got it from a one owner dealership trade in with 167,000 miles so from what I've seen it has a lot of life remaining. The frame is solid no rotting anywhere and very little rust.

It runs nice and strong but does need the usual maintenance work and a few small and medium things

Timing Belt - will do soon ( was last done 100,000 ago)
frame and hood Struts
Hood Latch
Brakes rotors
A/C system. compressor is solid but there is a leak somewhere and the cold component is lost after a couple weeks
Sunroof, leak somewhere have to find it
speakers and lower driver seat cushion.

Hope to get all done over the summer!

I'll try to find the timing belt thread you mentioned but if you know it off the top of your head please share!

oh! sorry about that! thanks for heads up

If you keep in mind their intent "light brush guard" they are not bad. I had one on a Dodge Ram and it saved the radiator from a pallet falling off truck in front of me on interstate. If I wouldn't of had one it would of taken out the radiator.

I know, I'm lame, but I'm looking for tail lamp guards, and possibly a brush guard. Still got them?

Hey, I threw out the tail guards a while ago. But I still have the front grill guard. Will be taking off this weekend. The passenger side brush guard rusted and fell off tho. So it's pretty ugly and strange looking at this point. Not sure if you'd want it.
