I can't hide my signature line anymore (or at least I can't find out how)

Hi there Woody and all you other admin heroes.

I've been using this new software for some time now and I'm already convinced it's a big step forward. (I already prefer it by a big margin over the old.)

And I've checked all the thread titles in this "NEW FORUM SOFTWARE Forum" and can't see that anyone else has raised this matter before. (It's not a biggie but if you can fix it I think it'll help us all keep the forums more free from clutter.)

Firstly - I'd like to say that I think signature lines are very important. Most of us use them to accurately describe our cruiser(s) to help others understand:
  • whether our experience is relevant to their problem (if we are posting in their threads)
  • whether they have experience that can help us (if we are have posted a thread detailing a problem)
  • which parts/components are likely to be present on each of our cruisers (and in which style) when we are posting a thread trying to repair or replace a part, and so on.
But while signature lines are important, the constant repetition of them that occurs when people engage in online conversations is pointless and wastes storage space.

So I like the option of hiding my signature line so I can remove some of the unnecessary clutter that would otherwise appears on my screen when I engage in a conversation.

But this option appears to have been removed. Can we have it back please (or am I just blind to seeing it)?

- thanks - Tom aka lostmarbles

Unselect the box in your preferences...

This time I think you've been too quick on the draw Woody. ;) (It's usually me.)

Yes. Sure I can certainly un-tick the box alongside "Show people's signatures with their messages" but that makes matters worse.

Did you read what I said about why I think signatures are necessary? We often need them so as to know the correct context in which a poster is asking a question.. For instance, if a poster asks the spline count inside their free-wheeling hubs and their signature line shows they own a 1980 FJ40, I know to give them an answer of 30.

So I don't want to hide ALL signature lines.

Instead I want to be given the option when posting (and remember that we used to be given this option with the old software) of deciding not to post my signature line in a particular posting.

Then, if I've already given my signature line earlier in the thread and I know that repeating it will gain nothing, I can choose withdraw it from subsequent posts so no-one will see it there (regardless of whether they've ticked their boxes or not).

Hmm...guess I never even knew that was an option :-) obviously not built in :-)
