Hi guys. Travelling through Santa Rosa today with kids and suddenly AC quits.
Outside is over 100 and the hot air not working for kids.
AC works every once in a while but not real cold. Passing through some area with smoke, the recirculation keeps on kitting back to fresh air.
Fan speed is ok.
I am going to Big O, the only place that can look at it and have them check freon level but not sure if the compressor is bad. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

first thing is to make sure your engine is not overheating. Unlikely, but could be serious. If your temp gauge is up there, stop driving ASAP and ponder the next move.

then look to see if there is fluid in the A/C window.

then look to see if you can see oily wetness around the lines, like in the front.

etc etc

You can go to most car parts store and buy -or even borrow- a refrigerant pressure gauge for a few bucks (say $20) and check yourself to see if there is enough refrigerant in the system. As easy as unscrewing a cap and sticking the gauge on. If too low, it's trivial to add to it with the gauge (say $15 for the refrigerant although the PRK has some sort of deposit on the container I think). Had to do all that unexpectedly once in the desert at the beginning of a long road trip and it was enough to get me home.

Fixed.
Too much freon in the system.
Guess what idiot did that--me.
Lesson of the day.
Do not buy DIY again.
Thanks
