I searched but it brought up a lot of noise and unanswered posts. Maybe someone can help. It's been a LONG time since I've been on here (blame the cows) so figured I'd dust off the posting cobwebs and dive back into forum life.

92 HZJ77. Taken out of storage on the weekend to winch a diesel 81 full of gas onto a trailer so we could haul it and drain it.
Turn signals worked ok on the way there. Truck sat with hazards on for an hour or so.
Now, turn signals no longer turn on. Hazards turn on DS only (so if I want to signal right I turn them on). PS doesn't work but hazards will turn on both if I have them on and signal left.

Could this be caused by a dying flasher unit? In my experience (40s) I think it's an all or nothing thing - you either have signals or you don't. Could it be a relay problem? Corroded wire? Two brand new batteries were installed a day before the rescue run. I'll have to find a wiring diagram next I suppose.

Any help is appreciated, even dumb suggestions so have at 'er. :grinpimp:

Hello,

The usual suspects:
  1. Turn light switch defective.
  2. Hazard light switch defective.
  3. Flasher relay.
  4. Grounds.
In old age, the copper plates in the switches deform and fail to make proper contact. Carbon builds up in the flasher relay's contacts, blocking current flow intermittently. There are ground points in the instrument panel and the steering column that get loose over time.

It helps a little to "soak" the flasher relay contact plates with circuit cleaner. The lights operate for a little longer, but not much.

I checked the grounds and found that they were loose. Suspension rattle, I guess. Then I replaced the combination switch (I had low beam/high beam shifting problems as well, but that is another story.) Finally, I replaced the relay.

Older model relays are discontinued. If your truck is 24V, a relay can be hard to source.

Hope this helps.

It does. Thanks. The turn signals just started working randomly again and have been solid. I guess I just needed to post on mud. The starter is now acting up so happy to see the cruiser fault index is alive and well.

Will have to spend some time going through connections and check the ground, etc. … and yes, it’s 24v so thanks for heads up on relays.
