So I have this 77 truck arriving soon and correct me if I am wrong but the Japanese radio won't work in the states. So I'm guessing a new radio is in order. I've seen a small storage boxes below the radio, that seems like a viable option for me as my nickname in the Navy was inspector Gadget with all the tools and stuff I had. So let's see some ideas.

The FM band on Japanese radios are lower freq from 76 to 90 MHz. I swapped out the aftermarket dual DIN radio/Nav unit in my 77 for a dual DIN Pioneer unit I had laying around. I will grab a picture tomorrow and post it up.

If you remove your head unit and want to part with the volume knob let me know.
I have a HZJ73 with the original unit that I would like to tidy up.

Thanks.

You can always go "old school". 1990's radio in a 1990's Toyota. :)
State of the art cassette player and one button bass and treble control.

Will do.

I've got a Toyota OEM radio from our US/Can market that I pulled from my 77. Double din with both CD player, tape deck and radio. They mount together or you can seperate them to have a single din classic radio and player while leaving room for 'gadgets'.

Pm me if you want it

depending how old the radio is you can do
1-put a frequency adaptor, cheap. thats on your antena cable. your radio will still show japanese frequency but on a basic radio it doesnt matter and you listen to your radio.
2-back of radio there might be a cd changer pin conector. internet research and luck enabled me to wire the pins such way that I can connect my phone/ipod to the radio. see on my picture the lower box with the jack cable. I basically cut the radio signal and put in the aux signal, then feed the jack into the other connector and radio works again.
mind you, podcasts are sound volume limited so you can never hear the music too loud compared to just radio signal.
3-speakers on the car are quite weak. rev the engine and you cannt hear a thing. I replaced the dash speakers, routed back speakers just in front of the rear bench and added the creative small speakers to the roll cage. and guess what...still poor sound. last I added a flat subwoofer and now the sound is finally decent.
4- can put a modern radio, but sound will still be a problem. I found the active subwoofer to be of greatest help.

I'd be interested in that.
