Hi guys lately I have been on a mission to get my 75 series ute driving a bit better so it's more enjoyable to drive on long trips at the moment it's a full time job keeping the thing on the road.
So far I have done : new 2" dobinsons leaves and shocks and steering dampener, new h/d adjustable draglink and steering track rod with new h/d tie rod ends, new shackle bushes, 3 deg castor plates, swivel hubs/wheel bearings done
When driving on the highway u need to constantly steer right just a little but enough to be very annoying to keep it straight if u let go of the wheel it will track straight sometimes for a few seconds then start veering left sometimes quite hard and immediately (depends on the road camber) also while doing this if it hits a bump it wants to go left. It also does not return to centre well at all mabey about 3/4 of the way back and then u have to manually straighten it, it seems to return slightly better when turning right but still not nearly close to centre. The steering is a little heavy and was really bad this winter early morning cold stars the worst took the first few corners to come good
I have had it aligned and balanced/rotated by a few different shops "best they could" it amazed me how different it was from each shop one even made it a lot worse than when it went in, the castor was at 2.6 deg which I thought was alright , the tyres are 33" maxxis bighorns they are a little old but worn alright about 70% tread left.
What could be the cause of this ? So far I'm thinking power steer pump ?
Power steer pump is on the to do list as it's been weeping for a while now but not sure this is the main culprit , I don't remember the problem developing after anything I have done it's has always been a bit like this but over the past year it has defiantly gotten worse and more annoying I did put Lucas power steer treatment in to try seal up the leak before I get the chance to fit a new pump mabey this has made the oil too thick ?
What are the main causes of steering not returning to centre in the 70 series ?
seized or tight ball joints / steering knuckles
Incorrect / lack of castor angle
My 60 series had much the same issue not quite as bad but I band aided the problem by fitting a RTC dampener on it which is not ideal
