Hi all,

Having checked many items on this forum in the past, which has helped me to do many jobs on my beloved hzj75 myself in the last years, I want to thank you all! Still I am having a bit of a situation that I want to tackle now. Since I bought the car I am having a crooked steering wheel, which is maybe of 20 degrees or so. Now this doesn't bother me to much on its own.

I have tried to change the length of one of those adjustable rods to amend the position of the wheel, but they won't move a thing.

Anyhow, the problem is that not only is the steering wheel crooked, it also pulls to the right if I let go of the wheel. Generally there is no vibration when driving straight, except when driving above 80 kmph or so. In the past I went to check for an overal alignment. The man of the shop informed me that the 70 series doesn't have any alignment possibilities and that in general it didn't matter as the wheels were all four aligned. He gave me the only recommendation he could, which was to rotate the wheels around, placing the front on the back and left on right. In the past I have had the wheels balanced as well without any succes to reduce vibration while driving.

So currently I have no idea where to start to identify the origine of the issue and the potential solution - after having driven for quite a while like this I am getting afraid to permanently damage something!

Looking forward to your insights!

Thanks so much!

I'm guessing you tried the adjustable rod for the steering after the guy checked the alinement. I think its best to take it for a second shop forthere opinion as it can be fixed whether the axle is bent or the adjustable rods you played with will need to be set up again. The steering wheel needs to be taken off the steering shaft and put back on straight after the new wheel alinement.

Hi all,

They do have toe in and the castor can be adjusted with shims. You also need somewhere that can do the larger diameter tyres.
Had mine done last month and they gave me the - + figures with the receipt.
You need someone who has experience wih solid axle tracks and 4wds

So given that you both assume that it is related to the wheel alignment and nothing else, I'll go on the search for a reputable alignment shop with some experience!
Thanks

I have watched them do alignments on my 75 series. They do the alignment 1st and then they align the steering wheel buy adjusting the steering underneath. You can pull the steering wheel off and straighten it but adjusting it underneath is the supposed to be the proper way.

Just a small update:

After redoing my front axle I changed the front tires - took a lot of the shakyness out of, although an alignment is still required. Nonetheless, with the tires swapped, the steering pulls much less than before!
