We are thinking about camping at Davidson River campground the 30th and 31st. We would go to Brevard's Halloween thingy on Saturday, but interested in doing Hurricane Creek to Hot Springs sometime during the weekend.

Anyone do this route regularly? I see lots of info about Hurricane Creek, but was wondering what the trails were like, etc. Mostly just all dirt roads? Looks like there are three different routes, but not sure if all are open:
  • North up through trail 1182 through Max Patch Mtn?
  • Middle on 1175
  • South bypass with a stop at Spring Creek?

Thx,

Hurricane creek trail is similar to slab pile or sawmill in Uwharrie, except less rocks and more dirt/mud. Your 4runner would be able to handle it no problem, although I would always recommend that you go with a wheeling buddy.

I was going to this weekend but no one else wanted to. I'll meet you up there and lead been there many times..

Heather has mentioned heading up to Hot Springs in the past, there is also camping at Hot Springs. Maybe a Sat/Sun thing?

When Brian and I tried to head North to Hot Springs we found a gate or 7. There is likely a way through but we couldnt find it. Also there is more exploring available outside the town of Hot Springs. I have a few roads highlighted in the gazetteer to try and find but have not tried yet.

There is a Hot Springs campground right on the river banks ive seen some use as a base camp to go explore from.

Eric, I could go Sunday, Saturday's are tied up in the fall with high school kidtivities.

Below is the route we did in July, from I-40 to Round Mountain campsite, then from campsite to Wolf Creek Rd. Woolf creek Rd then connects to Upper Shutin Rd, that the leads close to Hot Springs. If you have a gps app send me an email and I can send you the file. The second pic shows as far as we got on the left (the falls) and Hot Springs on the far right. That route I have not done, yet....

Not sure how the tail would be, there are 2 water crossings that might have gotten deeper with recent rain erosion. And it's probably muddy too. Ashville was a mess this past weekend with flooding. Bring light sabers for possible downed trees.

We were thinking about running trails Sat, camp Sat night somewhere, more trails Sun morning heading in the direction of Maggie Valley and going to the Wheels in Time motorcycle museum. We are open, just spit balling ideas

Based on all of the above, we will leave early Friday AM and camp somewhere around Brevard.

We will take the kids around Brevard Friday and then be ready to go Saturday AM.

We need to lock down meeting places for Saturday and Sunday for everyone going.

We will need to find our way back down the mountain Sunday AM toward Pittsboro. Could do some trails, but likely would head East at that point.

I got sucked in to doing our sales meeting in Scottsdale this coming week - not sure we will be able to do the trip now :( I am still thinking about it, but our plans are up in the air at this moment. I don't get home until REAL late on THU and my Son's work is pressuring him to work that weekend.

I have to get the truck in for wheel/tire balance Friday the 30th - - getting high speed shudder, still, after alignment and all the other things we have done.

Anyone made definite plans?

Before this news, we were looking at VRBO at renting a house in the area for 2 nights because a lot of the camping sites are closed for the season.

VRBO is Vacation Rentals By Owner

This one sleeps 12 - - would be fun to go in on a place w/ 12 people: Historic large waterfront home right in... - VRBO

$400 split three/four ways is still a lot of $$ for Hot Springs, but fun looking place.
