I just bought a neat 5x6 off road trailer that seems to be build really well but I want to swap the hubs from the 5 bold CJ pattern to the 6 bolt 80 series pattern. The axle is 2 3/8 in diameter so it looks like a 3500 lb axle, has brake bosses on the ends (though no brakes are installed).

Are axles and hubs standardized? Can I just buy new 6on5.5 hubs for a 3500 lb axle and they will just work?

Does anyone run electric brakes on off road tralers? Is there any reason not to?

Thanks!

I have been doing a bunch of searching and reading.

1: Complete replcement axles with the 6x5.5 hubs are available for around $140-$250 depending on whether or not you include ebrakes.

2: Simple replacement hubs might work. I called and spoke with Randy at ABC trailer parts. He said go measure the current axle spindle. If the spindle diameter is 1 3/8 for the inner bearing and 1 1/16 for the outter bearing, then new hubs will just drop right in. Much cheaper this way than buying a complete axle.

3: The trailer 6x5.5 hubs use 1/2" standard lug bolts so the Toyota OEM lug nuts wont work.

4: Some people do use ebrakes on off road trailers.
