I am in the process of re-doing a 1986 FJ60. There are these black metal sleeves that go around the front hubs. They fit to the inner hole of the wheel by some little teeth and are a PITA to remove. I had to take the wheels off first. Are these things of any real use? I could see them protecting the acorn nuts on the hubs perhaps, but in the real world, do I need them?

Nope, took mine off a while ago.

When you remove them you can service a lot more of the hub with the wheel ON, otherwise, you have to remove the wheel for any kind of service.

when i got my 4wheel parts wheels, those things wouldnt go back on. FJSRULE told me to just leave em off, so theyre in the garage, with all my other LC crap. -other sean

Sleeping with the EGR

I accept your thoughts on the hub sleeves. They will sleep in the big box with all the emissions stuff. Not all Toyota ideas are good and this appears to be a brain fart.

Not a brain fart, but rather a nod to aesthetics. Most folks would say the nuts and bolts of the exposed hub is not aesthetically pleasing. I disagree.. but it is more than likely classafied as a 'trim ring'.

I have removed them from all my cruisers, I like the rear caps, the front ones bring nothing but grief and I personaly think they look crappy
