My truck is an 89 toyota 4x4 and I have a strange clicking noise coming from my hubs. The noise is a loud clicking, and happens when the hubs are free, or locked, and while in 4x4. The noise stops when i remove both hubs, or just one.
My thoughts are that the hubs are somehow engaging while free, but that wouldnt explain why it clicks while hubs are in. Any help would be 200% more than apreciated.

thanks

CV joints maybe??

I just looked at the hub gear and it is worn on the teeth near the tip. Would that have anything to do with the CVs?

no i would replace your hubs though.. you can usually find the ifs hubs for $50 a pair... and if anyone asks more than that your getting burned!

i have done that... swapped the gears with the ones from my parts landcruiser. No change.

and the hubs that you changed from the cruiser came from a straight axle cruiser? if so the cruiser hubs are 30 spline.. and ifs toy hubs are 27? (anyone correct me if im wrong here) but i think that might be your prob? also look at the cv boots if they are torn they are probably gone bad... also grab the cv axle and try and see if there is any play in the axle from the joint

Cruiser hubs, depending on the year, are 30 as well.

Yes, the cruiser hubs are different, i just wanted to see what difference itd make, they work the same if engaged.

I have semi fixed the problem. I made up 8 gaskets and threw them on, the clicking has now stopped when the hubs are free... but the noise is still there with hubs locked in.

thanks for replys, still looking for permanent solution...

yeah i would definately replace your hubs with ifs toyota truck and 4runner hubs instead of the cruisers. i bet they are different enought to make the difference in it making the noise
