Good morning guys...

I am a newbie, long time lurker but first time poster...

I have a howling noise when I let off the pedal and I was told by a mechanic (not yota expert) that my front diff pre load pinion bearing might've loosened. They lifted the whole truck and spun it and they heard the noise from the front.

I have a 2006 with the AHC? All stock. Should I look for a second opinion on this?

I am getting lockers installed as well, the mechanic wants to charge me extra $750 to rebuild the front diff, plus $700 to install front and rear lockers...

Thanks...

Isn't he practically rebuilding the diff if he's putting on lockers? https://10.0.1.2:8080/clips.html

A couple of thoughts. If you're adding lockers, it would be pointless to add capability to what could be a failing part. Secondly, if you had to revisit the problem how much would it cost you to get into the diff again and would it put your lockers at risk or void previous warranties on the lockers job? I would just get an itemization of what the job entails: parts vs labor plus benefit of mechanic having tools to do the job.

Just my 2¢

My thoughts exactly, I told him he was going to dig into my diff anyways, why charge me separate just to rebuild it? then another to put the lockers?

I have already the lockers. As for parts, I'm not sure what he will find when he gets into it.

I will see what other possibilities that will be charged, labor cost and go from there. I just think he is not sure of what he is diagnosing. He is a good mechanic but 4x4 if not his cup of tea.

I am also thinking of going to MS gears in San Jose to get another opinion/quote.
