hey guys, just picked up a 2001 TLC, bone stock, lotsa miles. Not so long ago, I had a couple of Broncos, including a '77 project that I dump truckloads of money into before selling at a huge loss. I took a break from that and drove a new F150 for awhile, but my growing family demands more vehicle seating. I've always liked cruisers and it finally dawned on me that modern cruisers are everything I was striving for in my Bronco- comfy, capable, EFI, and durable. And my whole family fits - wife and 4 kids.

This car is in pretty fair shape I believe, but I do have some things to take care of right away:

- timing belt and other "while you're in there" items
- CV boots are torn ( didn't realize until after I got it home)
- tires are brand new, but cheap crap
- suspension is stock softy stuff
- Texas flares. Ugh. One is floppy and missing clips, so they're all coming off
- I hate FM radio, so need a new head unit with Bluetooth at a minimum, XM preferred

I'll post pics later, right now I'm typing one-handed on the IPad while holding my 3 month old daughter.

I just did the same thing, except I went from Jeep to a LC. Found a hole in the bottom of the rear shock after I got home. Pretty sure the guy who sold it to me knew about it because his mechanic told him to "budget" for new shocks in the future. I want to do the radio switch too, I never knew how awesome bluetooth was until my wife got it in her car. I'm trying to decide if I want one with a back up camera or not. Anyway, congratulations and good luck. Sometimes the fun part is doing the work, just stinks to have to pay...

Congrats and welcome to Mud! Key fob is common and you can swap the guts of your broken master into the new shell. That's what I did and it works perfectly. These are great family vehicles and with 4 kids, you'll use every bit of the space!

Congratulations on the purchase. The plastic case from ebay should work, I have done that to mine. The key fobs are expensive, but you can order extra keys and hide the fob close to the ignition switch so it is within proximity when you use a non chipped key. A friend of mine had a chipped key made at ace hardware for $80 I believe and it worked great. As for CV boots I would keep your Toyota ones and reboot. I have had lots of cars (about one a year), but the land cruiser 100 I have now is probably the vehicle I have owned the longest. They are great. Welcome to mud.

Congratulations on the vehicle and welcome. There is a lot of good information here. I ended up with mine because I needed a cash car I could safely transport my kids in, and it's been perfect in that regard.

There are so many great, affordable radio options in the market right now. You may want to search radio hiss or static to get out in front of that issue with aftermarket radios. Also, consider the @pfran42 Pfran Led interior LED kit, just added this kit to mine and it's a large step up for $50 esp when digging for kid crap in the back at night. AND GIG 'EM!
