I have a 97 4runner v6 Limited 4x4 with the OEM rear diff lock. I would like to ID the motor and am new to yotas. Can someone help me ID my motor and give me any tips on what that motor likes or does not like (Maintanance wise)
Thank you

Likes- Timing belt every 80k
Water pump when timing belt is replaced.
Long walks on the beach.
Oil changes.
Spark Plugs every 30k or so.
(im new to the engine as well!)

Dislikes: Water.
No oil.
Leaking
Tide.
Stop leak additives.
Overheating

Thanks, doubt I will walk it down the beach but I will probably have the timing belt done and water pump done. Any part brands to stay away from?

Most people try to stay toyota. They can be found online for lower prices.

From expereince, I steer away from oreillys.

I recommend OEM Toyota parts.

Check the 3rd Gen FAQ sticky at the top of the section.
(3rd gen is 96-02, so.....that's you.) :)

You can get an owners manual if you don't have one and there are parts places to get OEM parts at a discount price.

Also, welcome :flipoff2:(officialish welcome)

Thanks for the help , and the salute.
Here it is, already offroading and having fun.

I stay away from Moog and Duralast (Autozone) parts. OEM are the best and I've always found Napa parts to be a close 2nd. My new Napa lower ball joints are so much better quality that my old Moog LBJs it's ridiculous. You can see the difference in the metal, rubber, and the solid feel. And most Napa chassis and drivetrain parts have a lifetime warranty. The timing belt/WP replacement is actually 90K (not 80K) on 97-02 3.4Ls. It was 60K on '96s. Not motor related, but the rear axle seals leaking is a common problem with 3rd gen 4runners. I've replaced mine twice in ~10 years.
