My FJ40 was painted back in the 90’s with some kind of single stage paint. Unfortunately, the person who did it was better with a spray gun then with a roll of tape. I would like to get all the overspray off all the rubber bits without damaging the rubber. I plan on removing the top in order to remove the rubber gasket. At that point I would like to get all the paint off the gasket. What chemical or product should I use? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well xylene will almost assuredly take it off, but it is super nasty. I'm not sure what it would do to the rubber so I would definitely test it first on a sample piece. Sometimes you can take a plastic scraper of the back of a butter knife and gently knock the overspray off.

xylene wont do anything to that. If that paint has catalyst you can try lacquer thinner but will eat that rubber and make a mess, you would have to remove the weather strip to do a decent job and it looks cracked and dry anyways.

I would leave it or buy a new seal.

That is kind of what I’m afraid of. Thanks for your replies.

Just replace it with a new piece. Roger aka cityracer has this readily available in a factory correct repro.

That is probably what will happen. But I am cheap and the rubber on the inside is in really good condition.
