How to clean and paint alternator?

Hi,

Does anyone have some ideas/tips on how to clean/paint an alternator in this condition:

The aluminum has the type of whitish surface corrosion which cannot be removed by "normal" cleaning agents.

1. Can the aluminum be brought back to factory surface conditions and how?
2. If I want to paint the entire unit what would be the steps forward?

Never tried, but I think you can disassemble it and just paint the housing.
