How quickly must I cover Self Etching primer?

Tonight I made my first attempt at spraying Self Etching primer (Nason 491-17) to my hood. I must admit it is not real pretty, but from all Ive read it is not that important that the SE primer be very thick.

Should I spray another coat of SE primer to assure I've covered everything well enough?

How long can I wait to apply my high build primer?

It is late and didnt have time to apply the Nason 421-19.

The can says you must wait "at least 30 minutes."

I was wondering how long I could go before applying high build stuff.

Went back out to the Dupont store where I bought my primer and dude told me to scuff the surface with Scotch like pad.

Bottom line is I should have waited till I could do it all back-to-back without stopping.

A lot of folks myself included will do their body work over the SE primer, however I have put a sealer coat over the last few before the body work just to be sure, when thats all finished I put the high build primer after another coat of sealer.

Your self etch primer should be just a really light piss coat, you don't want a thick coat, it could cause your top coats to crack over time. That etches into the metal and then the primer chemically bonds to it. If you wait more than 12 hours you should, like he said scuff down with a Red scotch pad and reapply, then prime. You might also check the primer you purchased, it may be a direct to metal, or a "chromate" primer. If so you don't need the SE. Hope any of this helps.
