At least the crank is good~;)

So, where does one source the Joint Fuji Cam gear? I have a fresh, never started 2F that I now want to replace the ITM gear... s***.

this outta be a good one.........

one of my customers pulled his 40 out of a shop after they had it for two years to "rebuild" the 2F in it. head gasket was on backwards, they moved the valve train "bosses" around so no oil got to the top end,......real experts.
;p

I actually serviced one of those 'beat on sideways' rocker arm hacked 2Fs while I was in Atlanta on vacation before GSMTR last year.

One day Jim, your gonna have to come by and see the Mark's Off Road "Wall of Shame" collection of stuff I've pulled off of crusiers. Hell, between you, me and Whatley, we've probably got enough bastardized parts to build a rig that would scare Frankenstein!

Water in the air cleaner dimples is very common here in the NW during the winter. Condensation builds up on the underside of the hood and drips down onto the air cleaner. You really need to keep the rubber wingnut seals in good shape and replace them when they get cracked, to keep water out of the air cleaner and carb.

Jim, I'll have you know that rusty carb had not only the air cleaner on it but a hood over it too.

the rats must have been using that carb for a urinal for years then!

when changing to hei, don't bother using the gm hold down, just use the stock hold down even if it's loose and allows the dizzy to slip up out of the pump shaft. all that oil makes your bearings slick and they might slip. you really need bearings with traction, like these ;)

and to go with all of this, a split case to put behind the tranny. if oil seeps through your booger welds, you can coat on a couple of tubes of orange permatex.

How about an update Jim?

The F engine FSM says cam bearings must be reamed to final size. If the bearings are not reamed, the cam will be tough to install. Most people today just pound the cam into the block and start the engine. It doesn't seem to hurt things, though I definitely don't recommend it.

But this guy decided to be gentle and use the thrust plate bolts to pull the stubborn cam into the freshly rebuilt (and subsequently blowed up) F engine. Sure, it broke the thrust plate, but there were so many other things wrong with this engine, that it didn't matter. It looked purty on the outside, didn't it?

That DUI gear is scary at best. I recently pulled my DUI after close to ten years of running it and the gear looks like the Toyota gear with many, many miles to go. I would be curious as to the date of manufacture and whether or not they are still using an aftermarket gear that is of such inferior quality. I'm sure DUI would want that type of feedback.

Love them all. Thanks Jim. I didn't know about the ITM gear. I think I just stick with a new Toyota one and deal with the rubber failing after 200k. I've got all kinds of stories and pics of crazy things people have done. I store them in a folder labeled "what not to do". Maybe TT ought to do a issue where it's only pics of crazy stuff people have done or seen done to their cruisers.

Love it!

Jim any chance you want to move to Australia in the future, the more this thread goes on the less likely i think ill ever be to let another soul work on the old girls heart!

Travis.

Evans, that DUI had only been installed for a few thousand miles. The gear teeth on the cam looked fine. The clue was timing scatter at idle, but with no abnormal radial play in the dissy shaft.

Musta just been a bad gear somehow. :meh:

Experts say the head bolt holes should be thread chased and re-chamfered when the engine is rebuilt. Otherwise the deck can pull up around the bolt hole and prevent the head from sitting down flat on the block.

That never happens, right?

N00b engine rebuilding question. I've got the thread chasing covered but how would one go about re-chamfering the bolt holes?
