How do you make avatar move?

I've seen a couple of guys that have moving avatars associated with their posts.... how is this done? The one of Will Farrell banging the cowbell is just hilarious. Thanks, Luke

Dude , you have to find sites on the web that have a ton of free animated .gif files . In particular look for avatars because they are sometimes formated as 100x100 , which this site requires (or smaller) , and I think 20 k here is the limit .. look around and you'll find some .. then save it to your HD , and link it as your avatar in the 'User Control Panel' ..

ok, so finding one wouldnt be so hard, but what about making an animated gif? say from a movie clip or putting pics together? what programs will do that, any free ones? looked a bit in infranview, and photostudio4.0, and dont really see any clear options to do that.
