Hi everyone,
I need to change the alt belt on my 79 4x4 pu. I will also need to change the air pump belt soon, but that belt also turns the hyd pump for the plow, so I have to figure out what size belt that is since it is not a stock size. But as far as the alt belt, how do I change it? Do I have to take off the air pump belt first to change alt belt? As you know the alt belt is behind the air pump belt. So is this an easy job? Can you give me the steps involved in changing the belt?

Thank you,
Zack

I forgot (but I am sure you already know this) the engine is a 20r.

You may as well figure out the size for the odd belt first and change them both at once--loosen bolts on desired accessory and push toward motor, replace belts and tighten to roughly 1/4 inch of play per twelve inch span.
Good luck
Dan

Thank you for the response,, and I will try to find the odd size belt. However for right now, when I change the alt belt can I change it without taking off the air pump/hyd pump belt?

Thanks,
Zack

Which one is in front--I no longer have my 81 to look at and I don't know where your hydro pump is mounted. Easy test. If the belt you want to change is behind the one you want to leave and if the outside of any of the pulleys is completely enclosed by the other belt, then yes you have to take it off. Good luck,
Dan

Yeah the alt belt is behind the air pump/hydro pump belt. So I guess I will have to take off the odd-size belt as well. Hopefully the part store can match up the correct belt for me.

thanks,
Zack
