Is a Warn 8274 or a comparable 8000-lb winch enough for an FJ60?

in most instances yes...i've seen it pull out a pretty stuck H1 (hunk o turds)

i think the rules goes get a winch thats twice the weight of your rig...an m10000 or 12000 would be better...

....get a snatch block and you'll be fine, with the warn 8er.

An 8274 would be. Notice how many you see on older full-size pickups?

If it were me, and I'm biased toward Warn, I'd go 9500 minimum. That said, I'm putting an M12000 on my 62. It, plus dual batteries, plus a custom bullbar, plus moving the rack tent forward is going to be a heavy load up front.

I'm a big fan of 8274s and I've had other Warns to compare to.

I read an artical in one of the National rags about a test of an 8274 with a snatchblock against the M15000. Pulling the same weight the old winch was as fast while pulling through the snatchblock as the 15000 was single line. I figure that makes it a more flexible winch all around. IMO If you have to have an electric winch, the only thing better than an 8274 is an 24Volt version of an 8274.

Good luck

Ask yourself this

How much does a Hummer weigh???

Size your winch accordingly, this of course assumes you will do the right thing ( or maybe the wrong thing ) and unstick those non - Toyota vehicles that get stuck. That means a 12000 pound winch will pull out most of what you will find stuck on the trail.

ps> I had a 10000 pound winch on my old 60, it was great.

i will most likely get the 9.5ti. As great as the 8274 is, i'd want something larger for a big 60.

My xd9000i needed annual rebuilds on the wet coast of BC. Bought it new and used it for 6 or 7 years. Took it off and bought an old 8274 that has been rebuilt once. I think an 8274 with twice the cable and a snatchblock *is* bigger. I'm spoiled by the speed now.

It doesn't matter how big your winch is if the object you are pulling is heavier or offers more resistance than the winching rig.
I've had 10 years of good luck with my X9, and a snatch block.
Slow and noisey though.

8274 weighs way more than the 9500 and prolly more or as much as a 10 or 12000. If introduced today, they would prolly be rated higher than 8k. I run a Safarigard front bumper and plan a 9500 Warn; lighter by far than an ARB bullbar and 12000. But I street race my 60 all the time. :D

8000 is plenty to get yourself out of trouble (You can hang it from a tree if u wish)

But Buy a snach block and it becomes a 16000 pound hauler which will just about recover a small truck let alone a H1.

Maje sure its a rated block though they really make a mess if they break

I like mine cute and petite. under a 120lbs so I can fling her around :D
But I'll go up to 150lbs if I have too.

I've always wondered what was so important about winch speed outside of competition, I find my M10000 to be pretty fast and sometimes too fast, I can't imagine needing the full speed of an M8274. I prefer the horizontal mount winches. In my case, I got a smoking deal on an M10000, but if I was buying now I'd buy an M12000 or M15000. Better to go higher capacity so you don't have to double up.

Oh, and I'd go rope and hawse fairlead from the start, too, screw the cable.
