Are you guys driving from US/Canada all the way? I heard you couldn't (or really shouldn't) go through Panama into Colombia. Do you ship from Panama to La Paz? Those posts from Bolivia and Chile are incredible!! Makes me want to figure something out :hhmm:

Well you've got the Darien Gap in Panama so unless you're planning an all out let'smakeourownroad type of expedition there is no way you're crossing it overland.

You have to ship your vehicle from Panama to some point further south either on the Pacific or Caribean coast depending on your route. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/12/PanAmericanHwy.png

Some folks are suggesting research on your shipper BEFORE departure so you are not "over a barrel" once you get there. Gringo's generally get the "Gringo Price" which usually means significantly more than everyone else!!

Definitely start figuring shipping out before the expedition, some people are stuck in Panama for a while as they run around arranging for passage... BTW you will be running around no matter what due to good ol' bureaucracy:bang:.

There are many posts on MUD and ExPo with the names of contacts within shipping companies to get direct reliable info.

I have been in touch with several people who have recently shipped from Panama. Some have shipped to Colombia and others to Ecuador. There is also the option of shipping the rig in a container ($2,000 and up) or shipping "ride on the ship, ride off the ship" (RORO). RORO is a lot cheaper (as little as 5 to 6 hundred dollars), but it is risky as your truck and all its contents are fairly easily accessible.

Another BTW: The danger of driving through Colombia is not as bad as it was just a couple of years ago, and it is a beautiful country with great people... worth visiting.

Sacto60: are you planning a trip, or just curious?

Would love to if I had the time and if my rig was in exped shape! If there was a 12-14 day trip (total incl travel) I'd be into it for sure. I work on a school district calendar so there's room for the right trip...

shipping is really a straight forward process once you find someone willing to work with you. i've posted my contact's info in a few places here and on ExPo. driving is not an option to any sane person. as i have said before, don't skip colombia if you ever find the time to make a trip happen.

I just watch 'The Art of Travel'

Cool movie ... a group of friend attempt to cross the Darien Gap in record time,
Very nice scenery of central and South America …a couple of cruiser appears on the movie …I enjoy and recommend

The Art of Travel (2008)

Looks like this one fell apart, is that correct?
thanks
J

It appears that those who initially organized it will not be going. I will still be there but then I live in this area anyways. If you want to come down, go for it!! I'll be here!

Thank you! I will see how much time we can take off.
