Hi,
I have noticed a strong smell, like clutch or brake pad smell from my KZJ78 when I have it in four wheel drive. (off road going up a fairly steep climb, wheels not spinning) No braking and the brakes do not bind.
I know that it is not brake pads as the discs ar not hot, and it cannot be a clutch smell (auto). Engine not overheating and temp gauge normal. I am about to change oil in diffs and transfer box as a precaution.
Drives like a dream otherwise.
Any ideas.
Thank you.
John.

Could be wheel bearings. I had this on back axle many years ago. Smells like as you described.

I would have guessed collapsed or partially collapsed brake line but if your brakes are not hot......well there goes my theory.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
The smell only happens in 4WD and it smells like the front end.It drives fine in 2WD and there is no smell. Discs are cool. The wheel bearing would smell in 2WD too, I presume.
I am going to change the diff and transfer box oils this weekend and will check the bearings and brake lines then,
Thanks again for your suggestions.
Cheers,
John.
