Newbie here. I tried to do a quick search before asking, but may have missed some applicable info.

My wife have an '01. The horn started going off on its own. Nothing consistent, just a chirp here, a beep there and sometimes a long blast. I haven't had much time to really look at the problem, so I just unplugged the horns.

My question - would this most likely be caused by the switch? And would that switch be a simple contact pad under the cover on the steering wheel?

Anybody taken that cover off the steering wheel? I gave it a little tug but it wasn't coming off too easy.

Any suggestions before making a $500 donation to the dealer???

thanks

Haven't done it but found this.. in (b) looks like these are small covers around 4:00 & 7:00 on the front of the wheel and snap out
1. REMOVE STEERING WHEEL PAD
NOTICE:
If the airbag connector is disconnected with the ignition
switch at ON or ACC, DTCs will be recorded.
(a) Place the front wheels facing straight ahead.
(b) Remove the steering wheel lower No. 2 and No. 3 covers.
(c) Using a torx socket wrench, loosen the 2 torx screws.
HINT:
Loosen the 2 screws until the groove along the screw circumference
catches on the screw case.
(d) Pull the pad out from the steering wheel and disconnect
the airbag connector.
(e) Disconnect the connector.
CAUTION:

When storing the wheel pad, keep the upper surface
of the pad facing upward.

Never disassemble the wheel pad.
NOTICE:
When removing the wheel pad, take care not to pull the airbag
wire harness.

Steve,

Mine does the same thing.

My solution was to disconnect the horns by pulling the plugs where they mount by the radiator.

Sorry, that was not very helpful was it.

I'll check the service manual when I have a chance.

I had this happen on a completely different vehicle but the cause was a combination of slightly bent contacts and some buildup of 'oxidation' or residue on the metal.

i think if you clean the contacts, it will go away.

Steve, is it doing it while driving? If so then just wave like you know the people that are looking. J/K

I asked this because about a month ago I heard some horns blaring in the parking lot out in front of a store I was in; only two cars were out in front, a POS caddy & mine. I have POS caddy horns so it couldn’t be identified for sure. lol
It hasn’t done it since so I still don’t know.

my 99 horn would sound on its own and I would have to pull the fuse to stop it.
Took it to dealer and they said there was corrosion on the P2 relay(somewhere under a panel by left foot if I remember correctly). They cleaned corrosion and put heavy waterproof grease on it. Stopped it for a while and then it started again. They repeated process and put more grease in. Said to replace the relay would entail pulling dash and routing new harness at a cost of $2200.00. I'll use a bicycyle horn before I pay that. However, it has been working fine since the last repair. If it happens again the mechanic said he would try some other method of hot wiring the horn as he didn't want to pull dash and have to hunt for squeaks for the next year.
