Hood latch trouble (jam?)

I can't seem to get my hood to close.

I have tried slamming it down, etc.

I have a 96 LC...anyone else had trouble similar to this??

The latch maybe a little sticky. I have had this problem. I used a little silicon spray lubricant and have not had a problem for over a year.


More experience folks may have better/different advice.

I had that problem once...then I found the wrench I was closing it on.

if the latch doesn't return you may check the pull cable under the cross brace and above the left headlight. The cable housing on mine was rusted through and didn't allow the cable to move freely.

I have found that when I pull the latch to open the hood it will tend to not stick as much if I try not to pull the full range of motion-just carefully until I hear the hood pop.

Also, I can feel it when the pull handle does get stuck as soon as I pull it. If I push on it repeatedly (w/o pulling) before I exit the seat it will release.

If you study the latch catch mechanism you can see where the hang up is. I have a hook type tool I used to work it with penetrating fluid. It doesn't stick on me anymore.

My hood used to play this game with me. It would wait until I was on the freeway, and then it would pop up. Silly hood. WD-40 made that game short.

X2. This happened to me on a recent trip while checking the oil at a service station, and then again yesterday in my garage. Definitely only pull until you feel the 'click' and as far as getting it closed, use a screw driver (flathead) and press down on the spring in the latch mechanism. Be gentle, but it should pop back into the retracted position.

Mine was doing this regularly until I spayed the Latch mechanism with WD40, a bit oil and stretched the spring a bit with a screwdriver.
