After reading a few posts in here, the most recent on AZRocks thread, I'm considering brewing some beer after a 6-year hiatus.

I have a few questions for fellow homebrewers -

Dumb one but - is it okay to bring glass bottles on trails? (I'm thinking of post run activity strictly, as at AZRocks);)

What alternatives to bottles (CO2 soda kegs, etc.) are readily available?

Jonathan recommended a location at 101 and Guadalupe for supplies - any business names or other recommendations? I am looking for barley grain and whole hops as well as malts.

I used to keep 9 cases of empty Pacifico bottles for bottling in rotation, but those stayed in Louisiana - does anyone have some surplus beer containers?

    Carl

i have been a regular patron of "what ales ya" on 59th/bell for several yrs. used to deal with Gunn Brew but he closed his shop up nort der hey and went to tempe. what ales ya has everything from hops to bottles.

i always bring glass out for camping, i can handle the responsibilty.
there are large cans with taps like teeny tiny kegs for brew, but i've never used one.

Taster available

Carl,
I just want to make myself available to you for any tasting or sampling that your brewing operation may require. I'm sure after taking some time off it may take a few runs to get it dialed. It may be a tough job but I'm here for you man.

Thanks, Norm! If I keg instead of bottle I'll need a lot of help to cycle the batches efficiently...

Carl,
I have gone to Brewers Connection in Tempe on University several times, and haven't had a bad experience. Jeffrey has a pretty good selection.......

My .02 cents.

I have gone to both Brewers Connection in Tempe on University and Homebrew Depot http://www.homebrewdepot.com/index.html

I personally like the Homebrew Depot better and do most of my buying there or online. I keg most of my brew, I have a 2.5gal and 3gal kegs which work well in a normal fridge. I got the 3gal keg on ebay as part of a set with a backpack for serving at ball games....it works great for stuff like AZrocks. I usually bottle some because I make 5gal batches so I use flip top bottles that I got from Homebrew Depot. Using regular bottles is just way too much of a pain...you can also get some magnum bottles with flip tops which works well if taking over to someones house etc.
I do whole grain batches which I have found more fun and interesting with better outcomes...If you have questions let me know.

I am planning on making a Choco Stout for the AZ rocks event....we will see how it works it will be a Youngs clone.

Well, time to go shopping:beer: . I still have a cappper and a batch of caps, I'll check and see what's available. God knows what I'll forget since its been so long - It'll probably be like the three trips to home depot for one fix-it project:rolleyes:

Ok...well spent about 6hrs today brewing for the AZRock event. We went with a full grain chocolate stout which so far came out great. It is in the carboid and smells Great. Hope all goes well.

Sun Devil liquors on Country Club used to have supplies when I last brewed.
As to trail carrying, the usual concerns plus a couple. Of course, body panels and cops don't like people who drink too much, but we all know that!
I was thinking more of glass and bumps. Generally bottles hold up ok when standing up in a cooler with some space for ice between them. Glass will break, but only if it bangs against something hard, like more glass. Refillable bottles are thicker than generic throw-aways and hold up better. Still, be ready for some breakage sometimes. Don't carry much more than you will use, but a couple of extra in case you break one. For empties a longneck case should do. They have double thick cardboard dividers to pad bottles. Either way you may lose a bottle now and then. Be ready to clean up the mess.
And when using glass in the outdoors, be ready to shoot anyone who gets off on watching glass break! Shattering glass anywhere on the trail or in camp is infinitely unacceptable! Again, be ready to clean up the mess.
You can take almost anything on the trail these days, even ice cream, but take every shard of it back home with you. As with anything else, don't leave any of it behind.

P.S. Funny story. Years ago I used to run a desert baja off-road. If a LC can find a bump in the trail, try driving 50MPH across the desert with cheap glass in the cooler!
On an overnight run with two cars/two couples, I loaded a 12-pack of Bud in the cooler and tied it down tight. After dinner I got out the beer. On the third and last round I found a bottle with a dent in it! I did a double-take! Then I had to convince everyone that the bumps did not cause the dent! You cannot dent glass! Then I was hanging with rocket scientists. A bottle may look like a rocket, but it's not the same.

ooohhhhh chocolate stout!!

Any of y'all infused liquor fans? Or is considered that too foo foo? I'm thinking of trying my hand at making limoncello.

It's made with 100 proof vodka or Everclear. So though it may taste pretty dainty, it packs a helluva a punch.

Thats dangerous stuff!
