Hello IH8MUD people!!! I am new to the website and this place is the best....so much knowledge in one place.

Ok i have a question that i hope that someone can help me with. I have recently purchased a 1988 HJ75 that had a crack head cylinder from a friends. Since then i have replaced the head and done a rebuild on it. No now i have a lot of experience working on cars but this is my first diesel.

I have finished the rebuild and have got the old girl cranking with with some minor fix ups i have go it running. The car idles great and runs smooth but i cannot seem to find out why it is still blowing a lot of white smoke. Have triple clean the injectors and lines, checked for air leaks. Now since the car drives fantastically, minus it blankets down white smoke, i feel there is a small fault that i am missing. Maybe that are is air getting into the fuel somewhere and causing the smoke, however cannot be big other wise it would cause the car to not run properly. Is that correct???

I have been checking and checking and for the life of me cannot figure it out. Can someone please help me? I have not touched the injector pump so I'm thinking that the timing cannot be out that much (am i wrong to think this???). Could there still be air in the injector pump that is being compressing and being forced out. I have bled the fuel filter, cracked the injector lines to release any trapped air and bled the injector pump. Is there anything that i am missing??

Any help would be greatly appreciated and sorry about the book of a post.

Welcome to the forum;) Lots of 2H engines on here but only a couple of HJ75

Does the white smoke have a coolant smell to it?

If it was air,it would be difficult to start in the morning, thats when air is usually is at its worst, because it builds up overnight.
Once you give them a good run and the fuel is flowing the air problem disappears.Your correct in thinking if it was air,it would be running rough.
You could temporarily add a piece of clear hose to the fuel line near the pump and watch for bubbles to satisfy yourself it is not air.

So,I think its timing or a coolant leak.
Was the head new or used?

are you losing coolant?
is your timing set?
Glow system (does it the smoke disappear on warm up)
Injectors need servicing?

From my experience with a cracked head and coolant lose the resulting "smoke" would dissipate very quickly and would not linger behind the vehicle. There was also a measurable coolant lose on a day to day basic and a very noticeable smell.

Don't worry, it's just the timing.

You need to advance the timing a bit. White smoke on start up, especially after a rebuild, is a classic problem with incorrect timing. Been there, done that.

Not sure how the timing is set on a rotary pumped 1HZ, but advance it a few degrees and watch your white smoke go away.

This a 2H diesel.
