In the coming years we are planning on doing some international travel with our '89 HJ61 so I want to be sure that I have the right service manual that covers as much as possible. I have a 1980 manual , a 1984 manual and the 12HT manual. I was wondering if it is worth stepping up and getting a 1989 manual (and selling the other two off) as there appears to be several significant differences between the 1984 and later units. Is there an (English) FSM specific to the HJ61?

Thanks,
Jason

As the 12HT was only sold in the HJ61 ,it will always be specific to the HJ61.
I have an english version but its from 1985 and its a RMO12E(not for sale)

Sorry, I should be clear that I have the 12HT manual, I am just looking at the chassis manual. Because my HJ61 is more like a 62 than a 60 I was wondering if there is value in having the newer book. Specifically things like the vacuum activated TC come to mind but I am not sure what others (not having owned a 60). Also I was wondering if there were anything different aspects about the JDM 61's that are not covered in the standard manuals.

Its always better to have the most up to date edition, but I cant see you being stuck on the side of the road through lack of a 1989 edition.
This one covers the vac transfer case adequately.Toyota Land Cruiser Diesel 80 series 1990-97, 70, 75 series 1990-99 Gregory's Part No. 513
The 61 and 62 are the same except for the engine,at least the aussie models are.

I think November 1984 was the time with the biggest changes, with a fair amount of different torque values and many other slight changes.
You should at least get a post Nov 1984 manual.
Post Nov 1984 is 'late', and earlier version is 'early'.

The late-round vs square headlight versions weren't too dramatically different, I think.

From what i've understood the changes between round and square lamps was purely cosmetical, nothing new in the mechanical side...
