Hello guys,

I have the choice between two land cruiser hj60. One automatic, the other is manual 5speeds.

They are pretty much in the same condition and the same price.
What do you think ?

Manual. The auto sucks the power and with a 2h you need all you can get.
BUT I would take the one with the least rust 1st

The under body and the frame are pretty much the same for both.
The trasmission of the automatic have been rebuilt.
The body of the automatic is realy nice, no rust at all, a very good job have been done to restore it.
The body of the manual if very ok.

For me, it's realy a question of fuel consumption and of how they will climb big hill.
If the automatic would take 12l for 100km and would do the same job of the manual, i go whit it but it is not seem to be the case.

Oh my, i dont know what to do !!!!

No, i dont because i was looking for a diesel to get the more km with the less fuel and to have the biggest autonomy possible.

The fuel economy difference will only be like 5% or so. Once up to speed the torque converter locks up.

For long trips into the unknown the manual always has the advantage that it can be push started if you have a flat battery or bad starter

From Alaska to Argentina and then back to Montreal, I wouldn't consider anything but the 5 spd for many reasons said here and in the expedition thread. If we do it one day, our auto will be staying at home and my wife will have to learn to drive a manual.

Kim has both an auto and a 5 spd HJ60, let's see what he has to say.

lol,
So you think i sould realy go with the 5speed man.
I will probably have to go to manitoba but if you are shure of the difference of the fuel consumption and of the power, i think it is the best thing to do.
There is so much a big difference between automatic and manuel, it incredible !

I vote manual, I recently drove a manual around and it's nice. I owned an auto and didn't really like it... now Kim has it.

Like I said, I'd like to hear from Kim to see what he thinks, given his years of experience with both. I can only speak from a Nissan Patrol point of view. My wife loves driving the auto and personally, I like it for around town. But when it comes to driving through the mountain highways, the 5 spd is what I like.

I just like to re-inforce the idea that you get it turboed before departing with a quality set-up. I am sure you will want to be spending some time climbing in and out of the Andes and the Ande Plateau region. The fix for human high altitude sickness is coca (drink the tea or chew the leaf). For a diesel, the only fix is a turbo. Some passes in the Andes are over 14,000'. It takes a long time to climb that only using first gear.

Yes i am reading on the expedition thread.
How can it cost for a turbo ?
I would like to hear to from someone who got a hj60 automatic, just to be shure.
Because the one near my home is very clean and cheap and i could have the money to put a turbo on it.
Did the turbo help with the speed ?

A diesel without a turbo is only 1/2 an engine. Just ask John :)!

Do you know how much could cost a turbo ?

That depends how mechanically inclined you are. I paid $3000 for my first one which was a kit (easy and fast install) and a few hundred for the third one which I scrounged together (more time to put together the pieces and more time required to find all the parts). I'm sure they all work nearly as good as the next.

I wouldn't know that with a TD4.2. I can accelerate up Johnson Hill off the Port Mann in 5th without one. <ouch, right jab there Mat> ;) The top part of Kootenay is a whole other story with me stuck in 3rd. I wouldn't do the Andes without one: power, lower egts, less stress, etc.

The advantages of the A440F (automatic) are few. There's a long list of reasons why the H55F is the most popular big-ticket OEM upgrade from both the 4-speed and the automatic.

well if you do lots of time stuck in heavy traffic, and lazy bummer like me, auto it is. otherwise manual. as far as i know, to keep the auto long lasting, you need to keep it cool. i put on bigger cooler, use full synthetic, and change it more often.

If you are looking for fuel economy and have concerns about climbing hills, the only choice is the 5 speed! The difference in fuel economy is about 25 percent greater in the 5 speed. I also prefer the manual tranny in rush hour traffic, way easier on brakes and a lot less wear.

And yes, a turbo is a definite help on these engines.
