So I used to be a daily visitor of this forum some 20 years ago. Traveled across many countries in my 80-series, neglected it, mistreated it and always made it back home.

Time went on, we moved from Poland to California, my small son turned 15-16 and started driving cars. I never told him anything because I want people to explore their own paths. I'm not a person who is like: I am a lawyer so you, son, should be a lawyer too.

So my son started his driving by using my 2006 Porsche Cayenne (will be a small overlanding gem in a few years more). All was right but a bit too small for him. Then he bought a Silverado and quickly got rid of it after 2 weeks, then he bought a 100-series and liked it a lot but he wanted more simplicity.

You probably know how this story ends. Or starts...

He wanted simple front suspension, an inline engine with easy access and so on. After crossing out all the other options there was only one answer. So now he is 17 and we brought home a 1996 80-series.

A bit rusty due to spending life in Illinois but 89K miles for $9.5K is hard to find nowadays. Needs some maintenance but he specifically wanted 1995-97 due to the dash design. So we will need to swallow the cost and move on with the adventure.

It's funny how one generation later, the same vehicle is still considered the go-to choice for adventures and overlanding. I told my son: welcome to the family.

Your son and I went through the same desision tree.
I wanted a truck again....then I started narrowing down what I wanted the truck for and then what it had to have for features, engine, suspension yadda yadda yadda.

Turns out I didn't want a truck, I wanted an 80 series landruiser. The vehical wasn't even on my RADAR when I started.

Welcome to the madness, young man! :p
