Hello Mudders,
I have a high pitch whine from something near the front of the motor that is intermittent. It first occurred when I was attempting to jump start another vehicle about two weeks ago. It was constant while I drove to work, but then went away. Yesterday it came back under normal driving conditions and this morning it is gone again. I'm thinking a bearing in either the alternator, power steering pump, or maybe the air conditioner compressor, is the likely culprit. Although I haven't been using the AC.

Any advice on troubleshooting?
Thanks!

A nice smooth high pitch whine that changes tone with the engine speed?
I'd say alternator. Try turning the head lights, or off-road lights if you have them, on and off to change the load on the alternator while it is making the sound. That may confirm it if the sound changes tone or pitch.
I've noticed the same type of sound sometimes in the morning lately on my 100. Mine does change tone when I turn on my driving lights so appanently it is the alternator making the noise. It may be a factor of the cold weather, I hope.

badlander and hkeller, thanks for the feedback. I did try turning on and off the AC and that did not change anything so I sort of ruled out the AC. I will try the headlight test and then I will pull off the serpentine belt and check everything including the s-belt idler pulley. I like the possibility of a cheap fix.

Well it must be the alternator because today shortly after leaving the house the car started beeping at me and the battery light came on. I was about a block away from the house and turned around to go home. By the time I got home circuits in the car were powering down, no nav/climate, and many MIL lights were on the dash.

So I will be ordering a new alternator.

I am looking at the 2004 FSM, charging section page CH-5, and it looks like I have to remove the radiator assembly and fan in order to remove and replace the alternator. Is this correct? Any advise?

The fan would make it easier but you do not need to remove that. I took the support bracket off of the power steering lines and was able to slip it out the bottom.

Word of advice, remove everything from the back of the alternator before you unbolt it if you can, I didn't and it gave me hell.

Also. Order the 100amp if you can.

It looks like he has a 2006, which came with the 130 amp alternator.
