Any recommendations as to what might be a good product for do it yourself application? I'm in Canada if that makes any difference.

VHT makes a high temp paint in several colors that can withstand heat up to 1500*

I got mine at summitracing.com but its easier and cheaper to get at napa.

I have used this and really like it.......

I would just say use Tremclad for high heat. I think it may only come in black. Like for BBQ's.

But it's at C-tire. Clean the exhaust really well and brush it on. Might extend the life for few years.... Good idea Martin.

Does it really help to paint the exhaust? An exhaust shop owner told me that the pipes rust from the inside out, at least around here, so there's no point in it.

if you have the $$$ go and get it ceramic coated

I'm gonna say, yes it HELPS, but that's relative. Eventually, the red demon will still take it's victim, you'll just slow the process.
That's with ideal prep, and regular recoating, too. (Even the good stuff burns off, eventually) Short of $$ceramic coating$$.
