Hi there, Aussie here with a 1989 Land Cruiser H75. I've owned it for about a year and just had the gearbox reconditioned and a new clutch kit put in.

Curious from others who have had gearbox done on a similar age vehicle, how smooth was the box after recondition? I was expecting it to feel a LOT smoother, but still kinda crutchy going into some gears at certain speeds, as well as this new deep whorling sound in third gear. Before the recon I had this higher pitch whirling sound in 4th and 5th under load which is now gone thankfully. I am just trying to gauge with others as I've never owned a car this old so not sure what to expect after a recon

I had a similar experience after mine was rebuilt.
I feel better knowing there are now new parts and a pro did not find any problems inside.

What work was done as part of the reconditioning?

Job descriptions reads "Fully Rebuilt with full rebuild kit, brand new inputshaft, mainshaft, clustershaft, 1st/2nd synchro assemble, 5th gearset, 5th gear piece, 5th gear fork and full set synchros. Transfer; intermediate shaft, high gear, hi/low sleeve, hi/low shift fork, output flange."

I'd talk to the rebuilder, I wouldn't expect a rebuilt gearbox to have any sort of whine.

On the shifting, the H41/H42/H55/H15# all have a fairly slow/heavy shift but it shouldn't be crunchy. Castrol VMX-M does seem to make them a bit less 'baulky' to shift when cold. Is there any particular situation where the shift is more difficult than others?

Most crunchy when it's cold but when the oil warms up it gets a lot better. I'm probs just being paranoid. Every little sound this machine makes and I'm onto google trying to figure out if it's a problem haha

I will worry when the noises stop.

If you are used to driving a small car or even something like a Hilux, the gearbox may well feel heavy and slow to shift. It might be that with new synchros there is also a bit of break in, especially where there is a new synchro on an old gear (which according to the rebuild details would only be third gear).

Any noise which truly only appears in one gear is probably wear-related. It can only really be a gear which becomes noisy under load. Your countershaft is new, but (again, according to your rebuild details), you have original 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears. A worn gear running with a new one can make noise.

However, first you need to be sure it really is gear related. Is the noise present at all times in third, irrespective of speed? Does it go away on overrun? If you shift to 2nd or 4th at a speed when the 3rd gear noise is present, does it go away? If the answer to any of these is no, it is probably not coming from 3rd gear.

^^ This.
'Cold' in Melbourne is well above freezing temps right now. 10ish °C may cause the shifting to be a bit stiff, but for sureur shouldn't crunch or whine.
More in your Oil-check threat.
Good Luck Ralf

Interesting, yes the sound is more speed related as I can here it going slow in 4th as well. Thanks for the tip.

I notice as I drive it gets smoother suggesting to me the oil is more warmed up and doing it's job

I installed a new H55 and don’t really notice much improvement over the old one with probably 400,000km. 1st and reverse seems to be a little easier to get into.
Do you get much vibration in the gear stick? I also expecting that to disappear after recon but not so. I notice it particularly at higher speeds in 4th and 5th gear.

I would guess that those vibrations are coming from the driveline rather than the transmission itself.

There are two types of gear-stick (at leas on 60 Series cruisers) - one is a solid metal shaft, the other, later type is a bonded two piece stick designed to reduce vibration.

Also check all three engine/transmission mounts.

Okay, mines a soild metal shaft. Thanks for the advice I'll check it out.
