Have a 2001 Land Cruiser that will not start. Engine cranks over but engine does not fire. I know it will not start when the check engine light does not come on when you turn the key to the second position prior to turning the starter over. It is very intermittent and happens maybe once a month, But once in month is too often. Any ideas? Have taken it to dealer and there are no fault codes registering...

The other day mine did this to me, I pulled the key out, locked the door from the outside and tried again and she fired right up.

My guess is communication with the chipped key was lost for a sec.

I literally had the exact same symptoms on mine last month. It wouldn't start for the life of me. I tried everything.

Then I thought about the chip/transponder thing (I tried both keys but it still didn't start).

In the end it seems that I somehow knocked the vehicle into a type of diagnostic/float mode with a certain sequence of transponder buttons or in some other way I don't know about.

I pressed the lock button on the transponder key 3-4 times in a row, then the unlock 3-4 times in a row and voila - it worked! Car started up with either key after that.

I still don't know how I put it into that mode, but I know how I undid it :)
