Aloha,
I am new to this site and I am in need of some help. I just purchased a M101a2 military trailer. I am trying to find out some information about it and cant find it on the web.

Question 1. What kind of axle does the m101a2 have? (is the axle a 1500 #)?

Question 2. The surge brakes will need to be completely replaced, so i was thinking to change to electric brakes. What size is the baking plate. And what size are the bearings inner and outer.

Question 3. If I do change over to electric brakes could I just weld the actuator from sliding in and out (want to keep the pintle).

I will be using it more for camping. I know its a overkill for what I am using it for but it was a good price and its in good condition. By the way it has 37 x 16.5 tires and its an 8 lug x 6 and a half.

If any one can help I would appreciate it.

Aloha and Mahalo

Aloha your own damn self and welcome to Mud! :flipoff2:

I don't have a M101A2...but it I changed out the axle on my M116A2, which for all intents and purposes...is the same trailer underneth.

Here is a link for a guy who just did a trailer build like yours and can run either a pintle ring or a ball...prettty cool

Just purchased a Military trailer to build a family hauler

I changed the whole axle for two reasons, wanted to match wheels with the 4Runner...which are hub centric, and I had to have electric brakes.

I cut, very carefullly, all the springs perches, and welded them back on a 3" dia. Dexter axle, with a 6 x 5.5 pattern...in order to run toyota wheels, I also had to use Spidertraz to use Toyota wheels.

I'm not sure what your intended payload is,,,but in the long run you'll enjoy the safety factor

Aloha Pat,
Thank you for the reply. Do you know if I could use electric breaks on the original axle. If so what size backing plate do I need to get and would you know the size of the bearings. I would like to keep it the way it is because of one thing "Budget". I am mainly using it for camping (hauling camping stuff). I take a youth group camping and each year its getting bigger and bigger. I have a doge 1500 and will use that to tow it. I would like to keep the Lunette so could I just weld it to keep it from sliding.

Mahalo for the help.

Perhaps maybe try over at Steel Soldiers....my guess is if anybody has done a mod like what you're looking for, I'd bet they would know.

Steel Soldiers

I'm not very mechanically inclined, so I realized my best bet was to do a axle swap, which I hadn't done either, but figured it to be the path of least resistance. If your pretty handy, sounds like there might be a way to change it, although the surge brakes are just huge.

You can get a Dexter standard #3500 axle for about a $100 than I paid, but then the perch's and shocks won't bolt up the same....just didn't seem worth it. I ordered a 3" dia, same as what was there.

Good luck
