Hello Mud members, I am in need of some help with lower tail gate wiring. I got lucky and found upper and lower rust free tail gate on ebay that matched my color. I also got them for a good price, both for 950 including shipping. I was so happy to see the finish product and then be able to drive it tonight as well but I hit a snag.
The lower tail gate might be for a newer model LX because my 99 LX tail gate wires were going into the gate on the passenger side and this new one has the wires coming out of driver side. Mine has a huge rubber grommet and the replacement one is like a plastic. My only option at this point would be to splice the wires. My question is does any body know what wires I should be connecting to each other and any other suggestion will be welcome as well.
I am attaching some before and after pictures and for the wires as well.
Thank You

If you look closely the gate wires are coming out on the Driver side and on the passenger side you can see the rubber grommet, old wiring.

6 wires coming out of the new tail gate, 3 green 1 white, 1 red, and a white with a blue line.

Wires from coming out of the bumper are 3 green, 1 blue, 1 white, and 1 red.

I have never done any electrical work on any of my cars, so I am not sure if it as easy as it looks.

Cant you swap your wire harness into the new tail gate? Dont cut wires, carefully remove the wire harness.

I cannot due to the fact the new one comes out the DS and is not long enough to reach the original wire harness. On the passenger side there is not hole for the wires to go in. I am worried about the cutting, one wrong wire and I might short something out.

How many bulbs in the old vs the new ? Do you have back up lights in the old one? And the new one ?
I recently switched my lower on my 02 lx 470. First with one from a earlier land cruiser. And most recently with a 04 lx470 that has more lights.

What I did was strip the wires and use a test light to establish which went where.

Ones a ground
Then basically you got brakes , turn signals and tail lights

Maybe back up lights ?

Here's some general info if it helps:

The lower tailgate only has lights in it. At least for '98 and '04 LCs the wiring diagrams show the wire colors as:

Green: Tail lights
Green w/white stripe: Stop lights
Green w/black stripe: Left turn signal
Green w/yellow stripe: Right turn signal
Red w/black stripe: Back up lights
White w/black stripe: Chassis ground

I can't determine what a "Blue w/black stripe" wire is used for in the lower tailgate, but since the "Green w/yellow stripe" wire appears to be missing in your pics, maybe they made a substitution.

When cutting/splicing just be careful not to touch any bare wire to the chassis or the ground wire. Just extend them one at a time and things will be fine. Or you could pull your STOP and TAIL fuses before you start for piece of mind.

In the upper tailgate, however, there's lots of fancy stuff going on like defroster, door locking, rear wiper, 3rd brake light, backup camera, license plate lights, etc.

This is super helpful, I feel more confident now, atleast I know which wires to connect together. Thank You

Maybe snag some extra fuses just in case? Lots easier to have on hand if/when one blows.

Is that stock wiring?

Some model year LX have more back up lights.

On your original lower how many bulbs were in the housing?

two bulbs in the lights. The connecter seems to look the same for the old and new one.

I hope this will help...info from the Toyota LX EWD manual, 2000 version. It's identical to what's in our 2001.

With that said...

Back-Up Light Red with black stripe

Stop Light Green with white stripe

Tail Light /License Lamps Green

Turn Signal Light , DS Green with black stripe

Turn Signal Light, PS Green with yellow stripe

@Jason YY Keep in mind you'll see continuity through a light bulb (the filament is just a thin wire), so all those wires will look like ground until you remove the bulbs.

Go with the wire colors as gospel.

Thanks again for the white / black stripe as ground.
I had bent the heck out of my lower gate hauling lumber. Had swapped my original gate for one off a LC. Spliced the original harness into the LC.
Recently had scored a black lower gate off a LX , however the LX was two years newer.

Got it all working , minus the key lock. Which doesn’t matter to me as the remote unlocks the upper anyway.
