Hi all, question about a code thrown P1305 - Igniter Circuit #2. No discussiong of this found by searching the forum.

Short version: Vehicle hesitates under load. Idles and rev's fine in neutral. P1305 code thrown.

Long version: No history of problems. Towed 4,500lbs about 120 miles, added 15 gallons of gas at station never visited before. Code thrown 20 minutes later during extended idling while idling to repair trailer light and disconnecting trailer in the dark. Weather dry but freezing temps. No hesitation or problems, just light. Light went out next trip. I suspected it was O2 because of weather and marginal gas (methanol/etc. - have had that in similar conditions on other vehicles).

Next day: About 60 miles no problems/no codes.

Day three: Code thrown on freeway after 20 miles or so: hesitation under load, CEL on and blinking. Considered might be had gas, filled up with about 15 gallons of new gas from normal station to dilute. Vehicle sat and cooled, started and ran 30 freeway miles w/o problem, then re-threw a code immediately after leaving freeway and getting in stop/go traffic. Hesitation under load, fine in neutral. Stopped and read codes, both were P1305- Igniter Circuit #2.

I've searched the forum and found no past tech discussion on this code or common problems. Any advice or places to steer me short of the dealership?

super easy job. Call or visit your local toyota dealer. Purchase an ignition coil. $85 The #2 cyclinder is the passanger side front.

Take that plastic V8 siver cover off and throw it away. Unplug the wire connection that looks like the piece you purchased. Remove the 12mm bolt that is holding the old one in place. It is pushed onto the sparkplug below. Pull out the old one. Push in the new one. reinstall the 12mm bolt. plug in wire connection. I believe the #2 can be reached without removing the plastic air intake.

Pic. This one shows the DS but you get the idea.

Whoa, wait a minute. This means the #2 cylinder Coil?

I had that problem last year, and got a different code (I thought). I replaced the coil-over plug on the forward right (pass.) Cyl bank . I had a P0302 code that indicated that issue.

If it's the same thing again 1.2 years later, on the same cylinder, then I might have something wrong somewhere else to keep wearing out the same coil. Grr...

Perhaps the rest of the circuit that feeds the coil and hence the different code. Did you use an OEM coil ?

FSM says
1. check spark plug and test for spark
2. check wiring/plug between coil and ECM (if you removed this coil previous then a loose connection seems a likely cause and I would start here)
3. Check voltage at Igniter(coil) ECM terminals to the coil. If good replace coil.
4. Check harness

Several other steps if that fails ...

Ignition section of the FSM has slightly different steps for a general problem.

spark test
inspect connection
replace coil w/ good coil from other cylinder
check power at coil - should be positive with ignition switch on
then camshaft,crankshaft sensor and ECM.

When I replaced it last year I switched the coil from cyl 2 to cyl 1 and the fault followed the coil (e.g., P0302 became P0301 code). I replaced with an OEM coil from a reputable local parts supplier - I believe it was a Denso unit.

I wondered why the coil failed, but did not dwell too much on it. Tonight I switched the plug and the condition persisted for one mile, then went away and now it is driving fine. The fact it is intermittent has me wondering, too.

Tomorrow I believe I will swap the coil again between cylinders and see if the fault follows the coil, and also try to find the values for the voltage at the coil harness and check that. Rather not fry another coil in a year or less. If the harness values test OK then I guess I will write it off to a bad replacement coil.

I'll be sure to source the new one at a the Toyota dealership and not trust someone else's assurance of "OEM" maker.

You switched the spark plug ? with another cylinder or for a new plug ?

I recommend cdan here on the board. He can overnight something small like the coil and still save you money. Plus you know it's Toyota OEM.

I meant I put in a new plug. I swapped the coils from 2 (the faulting circuit) and cyl. #1, then cleared the codes. Have ran it 30 miles or so stop/go around town for two days now and no errors. Hmm... Maybe it was the connection.

As I now am not in a crisis for a coil, I may follow your suggestion and order an OEM one from him, throw the non-Denso one I got last year in the rear as a spare. With 150k on the odo, I imagine the odds of needing another one in the next few years warrant it.
