Well I've owned my dream truck now for about 4 days and the "Check transmission" light just lit up. I purchased a 1999 Toyota Landcruiser with 77k miles.

I was driving to work this morning in Dallas and the bridges and overpasses were covered in ice. I decided to use the "2nd" button which I assume starts the car in 2nd gear so I don't spin out when taking off from stop lights, etc... Five minutes later the light comes on. I think it's the transmission, it's orange and says "Check" which what appears to be a little picture of a transmission. I don't have the owners manual so I have no idea what triggers this light to come on. Should I be driving immediately to the Toyota dealership?

I can't believe I already have a warning light on...this sucks! Thanks in advance for the help!

Sounds like you check engine light. Many places will read the code for you for free, and it will give you info about the problem.

My guess is that it's been coming on for a while, and the previous owner reset it and sold it to you. Just a guess...

That's your "Malfunction Indicator Lamp"; when lit (per '99 LC owner's manual): "a. Fuel tank empty; b. Fuel tank cap not tightened securely; c. There is a problem somewhere in your engine electrical system, automatic transmission or electronic throttle control system".

Check the obvious and if you can't resolve then you'll need to take it to the dealer or a Toyota/LC knowlegable mechanic.

Thanks for the info on the malfunction light. Turned out I need to have an oxygen sensor replaced. Not what I wanted but at least it's not a major mechanical breakdown. Everything is fine now and I'm back to loving my new 100 series.

As you approach 100K, new O2 sensors are almost a standard maintenance item.
