Hi, I’m new here and new to working on cars beyond basic servicing. I bought this land cruiser Ute hoping to learn but I might have bitten off more than I can chew.

I bought it a couple of weeks ago and noticed it was blowing a lot of smoke.. after investigating I found a oil leak behind the turbo and am guessing the oil is burning in the exhaust causing the smoke.
I did some reading on the matter which lead me to check the oil return line which appeared okay (not clogged or anything)
I removed the air box and there was oil and there was oil residue in the air intake pipe close to the turbo (not sure if this is normal)
I then turned my attention to the wastegate noticed the previous owner had zip tied a link in the tube leading to the wastegate which I removed (not sure if this will help)

My question is what else can I check/try to address the issue. Any help appreciated!

Oil in the exhaust... post turbo - could be either the seals in the turbo are tired and allowing the lubricating oil to bypass through to the exhaust.

However, if you are getting a fair bit if oil burning, then it is possible the turbo is not the culprit at all, but rather blow-by coming from the breather from the head to the intake. Maybe pull the breather line and check the intake manifold for excess oil as well in case the oil is going into the engine and being burned along with the fuel. If this is the case then you could be looking at rebuilding the head.

Hope you find the actual culprit and it is a not so arduous a fix.
