Hey folks, get a load of this ID plate from the BJ70:

Can someone help me decode it? So far I know that it's:

1. A BJ70...the "S" and the "MR" I don't know
2. 3B engine 3431cc
3. Frame # BJ70-0008831
4. Color is "045" ?????
5. Trim is "LA41" ?????
6. H55F tranny with 9.5" pinion, 4.111HD ratio, 4 pinion limited slip.
7. Built at A11 ?????

I don't know about the "S" but the "M" stands for 5 speed, the "R" stands for the standard package.

All of J7 series I've seen were built at the A11 plant (location? "A" for Araco perhaps?) . There are Toyota plants in other countries that built cruisers from a completely knocked down state, imported as parts to be assembled within that country to satisfy the local regulations.

Maybe the S is for softtop, even though its in the wrong position, but being such a radical departure from the rest of the model line up it deserves a prominent position:cool:

The decoder on Rob Mullins TLCFAQ is not exactly clear on what letter is used to designate softops.

The A/11 is for the Honsya plant in Japan :D

For the domestic market, Toyota calls the soft top the BJ70 without any suffixes before the hyphen. The JDM hardtop is the BJ70V. Since all domestic models are RHD, it doesn't say "R" or "L". In export models the steering handedness is specified before the hyphen, before the top/body designation.

S, N are Japanese trim levels for standard and LX.
